TP-LINK TL-R470T+ Load Balance Router - Combine existing internet enabled lan with fibre modem?

Hi,

I have a lan switch on the ground floor fed by a fibre connection.

I have a lan switch on the first floor which is connced to the one on the ground floor, bringing lan traffic and internet to the first floor.

I am shortly having a second fibre line fitted in the first floor, and want to add the bandwidth to the lan with a TL-R470T+ on the first floor.

Can this be achieved? If I plug the ground floor switch into the TL-R470T wan port2 (with the new fibre modem in Wan port1 and the first floor switch in the TL-R470T's LAN port) will I get load balanced internet, and lan traffic in the first floor switch? And vice versa, will the ground floor PCs still have access to first floor network shares and intranet?

It won't work like you want. The TL-R470T+ will create an new network for the 1st floor and they will not be able to talk to the ground floor. What you want to do is go directly from each fibre modem to the TL-R470T+ and then from the TL-R470T+ to your switches (are they switches or routers?). If you can, I would get the 2nd fibre modem installed next to the first ... otherwise, I expect you will need to run a new Ethernet line between the 2 floors.

Also, are the fibre modems just modems or router/modems (if they have multiple LAN ports they are router/modems). If they have router functionality, you might want to turn that off and use the TL-R470T+ as your only router.

This is what I suspected, or at least it would take some serious config to pass through the lan shares!

Yes they are switches, and I will turn off the routing on the fibre modem/routers and use the TPL.
