This is VERY true, there is no way to track the stolen laptop unless something like LoJack for Laptops was installed in advance of it being stolen. There really is no means to track a computer by MAC address or IP address and the serial number is not transmitted either.

Report to the authorities and it may actually turn up in a pawn shop or as part of an ongoing investigation.
