trying to track machines down by their SN
any ideas how i can do that?

Look at the back of the PC's, thats where the SN is recorded. Unless
it's a laptop, then you can look on the bottom. If you "made other
arangements" for SN recording, then more options are available.

Software can't read stickers on the back of a machine. That is
where Bob's "If you made other arrangements" clause comes into
the picture.

If you neither your nor the manufacturer did nothing to put the
serial numbers "into" the machines where it can be accessed by
software, then obviously there is nothing you can do by software
to read the serial numbers.

If you only have a few dozen machines, then you should resign
yourself to going to each machine, reading each number, and
manually inputting it into whatever records you are creating. If
you have a few hundred machines, then you should consider the
purchase of a bar code reader.
