Transfer data completely onto new computer with Windows 10

Hello. My old neighbour has been using a Windows XP for the last 12 years. He now wishes to buy a new computer with Windows 10 and transfer all his data onto it. He wishes to have an identical desktop setup and wants all his programs (including Microsoft Office 2002) and files on the new computer. Moreover, he wishes to keep his current hard disk inside the old computer to use as a spare computer in his bedroom. How do I go about helping him to do this?

You can transfer all the data like music, pics, etc. but you will need to reinstall all the applications, as these are two different computers, with different hardware and OS.
As for transferring the data, you can attach the drive form the old computer internally in the new one (SATA and power cables) or externally (SATA/IDE to USB adapter + power cord). Once you attach the drive, you can transfer all the data, except for the applications, which you will need to reinstall.

files are easy, buy a new machine, connect both to his router and move the files via the network, or a USB stick.

Desktop, the only difference with '10 is the tiles on the start menu which can be disabled one by one, or simply ignored (or maybe, just possibly, even found to be useful and used).

Programs are the difficult bit... they legally can't exist on both machines at the same time, and you can't 'just move them' you'd have uninstall from one and then using the install media install on the other... However the cost for the office suite is high, possibly too high, so you can go down the open office routes, or for some familiarity office 365 and rent them for £5.99 per month, which might be more palatable.

Can I suggest you/he considers a NUC, all solid state, silent, small, would fit nicely into a non techy home, possibly even able to be bolted to the vesa mount on the monitor.
