hey guys,

I have a WD external 1TB HDD, around 5 years old.

I have it attached to my Net-gear r7000 and use it to stream movies to my kodi box.
Lately movies have been stuttering and halting for a few seconds once in a while.

Now I noticed when I copy big files to the HDD the transfer speed is great around 100mb/s but then suddenly drops to 0mb/s. After around a a second it then returns to the usual transfer speed.
So transfer speed completely halts.

Could this explain the stuttering when watching movies? This HDD has never had this behavior before. Is this a sign that it's starting to break down? Disabling av has no impact.

thank you!

Edit: added Crystaldiskinfo screenshot, It reads 'warning' in yellow.

Might indicate the drive is failing?

Hi there robboman93,

That is really unpleasant. 🙁

My suggestion would be to start with just backing up the important data stored on the drive. You should always back up your important data. Furthermore, the drive is 5 years old.

It seems that there are some weak sectors on the drive. Sometimes, the writing zeros process (fills in 0 value in each sector) could help in similar cases. This is why, you can write zeros on the drive with WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=mqH079
Keep in mind that this is a data destructive process. You need to back up all the data stored on the drive. After that, it would not hurt to run both short and extended DLG tests. See if the zero writing would have any impact on the SMART data.

Let me know how this goes,

Thanks for your reply. I've tried your suggestions and did the zero writing process using the program u suggested. It finished successfully. When I try to connect my drive now windows does recognize it (it begins installing drivers) But it does not show up in explorer.exe. I opened drive management and it not showing there either.
