I have a Samsung spinpoint f3 and i am trying to transfer some stuff to a usb 3.0 Goflex 1.5tb drive. I started at 325 mb/s and quickly stumbled to 14 mb/s.... I transferred the same data to a usb 2.0 drive and got 30 mb/s constant.

I have a gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 motherboard. which has two usb 3.0 inputs.

Anybody know why im getting so slow of transfer speeds to my usb 3.0 drive.

Solution
The usb 3.0 high bandwidth allows for really fast emptying of the fast disk cache in the initial moment (burst rate), and leave the mechanically slow hard disk platter to transfer small files, requiring constant stop to seek new file. In contrasts, in usb 2.0, the mechanical hard disk also transfer at 15MBps but since bandwidth bottleneck restrict the emptying of the cache in burst at the beginning, the data in the fast cache linger and is transfered at the same time as the platter data to saturate the 30MBps, giving it a more average speed. Now, if you have larger continuous file, like a any file over say 0.3GB. Because there is little seek for small file, hard disk platter will rotate without stopping. usb 3.0 will not be a bottleneck...

Benchmark results:

Transfer Rate Minimum : 70.1 mb/s
Transfer Rate Maximum: 138.5 mb/s
Transfer Rate Average: 114.8 mb/s
Access Time: 13.5 ms
Burst Rate: 162.4 mb/s
CPU usage: -1.0%

Ok ran bench mark on 3.0:
Transfer Rate Min: 45 mb/s
Transfer Rat Max: 97 mb/s
Average: 75.4 mb/s
Access time: 20.5
Burst 134.2 mb/s

Transfered small music folder from 3.0 to internal (1gb) : average speed about 60 mb/s transferred back about 30mb/s

Transfered 3gb music folder to internal: average speed 40mb/s
transferred back: still transferring at a speed of 10mb/s

actually in computer management it shows Disk 0 and Disk 1.
Disk 0= 100 mb NTFS and 931.41 gb unallocated
Disk 1= 101 mb unallocated and (C:) 919 GB, and 11.48 unallocated

Internal transfer (samsung) to other Internal (wd) speed of 81 mb/s (3.8gb music folder)
Transferred back Steady at 200mb/s until about 3/4 way done dropped to a low of 120mb/s

Transferred same 3gb file from Internal 2 (wd) to usb 3.0 with constant speed of 45-50mb/s

Transferred back at 1gb/s for about 1 sec or 2 seconds went down to about 500mb/s then dropped to a low of 450mb/s

I can see the transfer rate to the usb 3.0 drive is the worst of all performance. Is write cache enable on the usb 3.0 drive? Enable it if it is not. I think most likely there is a problem in the usb 3.0 implementation. Nearly there. There can be foure potential problem. 1. the hdd in goflex is bad and writes slow. 2. the go flex enclosure is bad and writes slow. 3. The usb 3.0 driver is causing the bad performance. 4. Firmware. I suggest update and reinstall usb 3.0 driver. Update goflex drive firmware. If that is not working, I think we should get a second opinion on what is wrong. Although I cannot see any other problem. If my dianogstic is correct, the provided that you have warranty, return the goflex drive.

Anyone reading this thread have a second opinion?

i just got the latest driver from the gigabyte website for the usb 3.0 ports. installed ran same test as above and came up with the same speeds. So at this point i should call manufacture for a replacement?

Alright so this is kind of weird. Transferred a 18 gb mkv file from internal (wd) to 3.0: This has gotten me my highest transfer rate yet 120 mb/s for first 6 gb then dropped to 85 mb/s for about 8 gb and finally went to 63 mb/s for that last little bit.

When i transferred it back. well i got around 12 mb/s even slower alot of the time. infact it is still transferring

I think you can cancel the transfer. If you enable write cache on usb 3.0 drive and 12MBps is from wd to usb 3.0 and you reported eariler about 9MBps from spinpoint to usb 3.0. I am pretty sure the usb 3.0 is not writing as it should. Call up the manufacturer for exchange or return to shop in DOA period.

Samsung-->WD and WD-->Samsung is fast right. Then the conclusion is that the problem is random and cause is inconclusive. Sorry, I am also puzzled here. Need someone with better skill here. I am going to find a top expert and send them a message to ask them for help.

The transfer speed between the internals is pretty fast and constant: 65ish mb/s
and then as i stated above from WD-->usb 3 fast opposite slow Samsung-->usb 3 slow opposite fast...

I appreciate all your help Pyree and returning for all my questions.

I asked Hawkeye22 and got this reply:

I didn't read trough all of the posts, but some F3's have a firmware bug. Samsung has released a firmware update to fix the problem. have the OP check the samsung web site for a list of effected drives. If his drive is on the list, he will need the firmware update.

You may want to ask him directly.

Alright thanks Pyree, i searched for a couple hours about the firmware problem. It seems i have the latest most up to date firmware for the F3. Tried the transfer test again First from
3.0-F3=slow
F3-WD=Average (65mb/s)
WD-3.0=Slow
WD-F3=Average
F3-3.0= slow.

I also have a macbook pro with firewire 800 port, so i plugged a firewire adapter (that i previously bought for this drive from Seagate).
FW800--MBP=70 mb/s
MBP--FW8= 70 mb/s

Lastly I tried on my Girlfriends Asus Laptop (3.0 enabled with same drivers as my rig).
3.0--Asus= 75-85 mb/s (little fluctuation but generally pretty steady at 80mb/s)
Asus--3.0= 74-99 mb/s (started out slow eventually got fast then slowed down a little)

Could this may be not a problem with a drive at all rather the mobo's 3.0 ports. on newegg some of the reviews say the the usb 3.0 port is "hit and miss".

Any insight would be great especially if someone has had the GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 mobo.
