Hello, i need help. I got an ssd that is an Samsung 850 evo and im trying to figure out how to get windows on to the ssd. However, the problem is that i would have to clone my HDD (full) to my ssd which i can't because my ssd only has 250Gb while the stuff i have on my HDD is above 250GB. Any ideas how i can transfer window 10 (window 8 to window 10 upgrade free). The samsung migration is kinda wonky. PLEASE HELP!!

Solution

There is no "uninstall" of windows from that drive.
Ideally, what you want to do is find everything you wish to save from that drive, copy it elsewhere.
Then, delete ALL partitions on that drive
Then copy that data back to the now empty drive.

1. You can't transfer "only the OS". All or nothing, mostly.

2. The consumed space on the source drive needs to be below 200GB for this to work.

So....what, exactly, consumes the space on your current drive?
Do you have a 3rd drive to maybe relocate some large files to?
The Samsung Data Migration allows you to leave off certain files. Doc/Video/Music. Other than that...it all goes.

200GB is the number you're looking for.
Once you get to that point...
Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the 450MB Recovery Partition, here:

-----------------------------
