Hi. I'm about to build a new system and do a clean install of Windows 10 on an ssd. However I would like to transfer my data from my old hard drive (which has windows on it) to a new one in the system. Would there be any problems if I did the clean install of Windows on the ssd first and then plugged in the old hard drive to transfer my data?

Solution

As long as the system doesn't try to boot from the old drive, no problem.
Depending on where, exactly, your old data lice, you may have to Take Ownership of those files/folders.

So would I be able to boot up the system from the ssd and then plug the old hard drive in whilst it's running? Would it be easier to get a SATA to usb adapter?

I much prefer having a USB dock for this type of thing.
1. The system absolutely will not try to boot from the old drive.
2. You can change drives at any time, PC on or off.
3. It comes in handy over the years, for other drives.
4. You don't have to open up the case.
