Transfering upgrade-version of Win 7 to new homebuild

So I've just build my new system, and am currently trying to figure out a way to transfer my license (which is the Windows 7 Ultimate, upgrade-version). Microsoft Support told me I had to have a full version installed FIRST, before I could reinstall my old upgrade version. So this would intail me buying a completely new OS.

I'm wondering if there is any other way to tranfer the OS to my new system without having to buy a full version of Windows? (i.e. boot disk, hard driving cloning, etx...)

When using the upgrade version the terms of the orignal license applies ie; if it was a full retail version it can be reused on another pc after removal from the old one, then the workaround that anonymous1 gave you a link to is quite legal.
If it's an OEM version, then the license is not transferable it is locked to the original pc.

Yes, the way I would do it is connect the old drive on it's own (DO NOT connect the new one untill all is well) start it up and it should boot ok, then install the drivers for your new motherboard.
Connect the new drive, leave as is don't create partitions or format, you can choose how big you want the boot partition using the WD version of Acronis whenyou start the transfer.
Once you are sure things are going ok, download the WD version of Acronis>

Use that to transfer an image of your old drive to your new one, you can use all or part of the new drive choose how big you want it and leave the remainder and do it with Windows.
You will have 3 days to reactivate Windows (that's a must no choice here), you will need to phone it in and follow the prompts.
