Transferring data from an old HDD to a newer HDD

Hi.

I'm planning on completing the purchase of my new computer tomorrow and I have a question regarding the process of transferring data from my old computer hard drive.

I plan to install Windows 7 on my new computer, and then connect my old hard drive (that has Windows XP installed, so that I'll have 2 "bootable" drives in the new computer).

- After doing that, is there anything I need to make sure before taking my computer back on (except for making sure that the new HDD is first on boot)?
- Should I then just copy and paste my files onto the new HDD regularly or I need to set something up in the settings?

Thanks a lot!

Basically you put the new drive in the computer and make sure that you boot from the new HDD.

I would recommend removing the password from the user account on your old HDD. That prevents having to take ownership of the files which can be a bit time consuming and adds a few extra steps.

Once you have the drive mounted and your new OS boots, it's as simple as copy/paste. Also, just to note in XP most of your user files are in c:/documents and settings/%username%/. In Windows 7 they are in c:/users/%username%.
