Transferring data from XP hardrive to new Windows 8 Computer

I have an old VPR computer that I bought from Best Buy years ago. The computer will no longer power up, so we bought a new laptop which runs Windows 8. I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve the the data (files, pictures, etc.) from the old XP drive using our new Windows 8 laptop?

I tried installing the VPR drive in an old Dell tower we have, but the VPR drive has pin connectors which the Dell doesn't.

How the interface on your old hard drive looks like? If it has pins arranged in two rows, how many pins are there?
