Transferring files from one HD to another

I have finished building my new computer including a 3TB SATA HD with Windows 10 installed. In my old computer I have a 1TB SATA HD with Windows XP installed. I have files I need to transfer from the 1TB HD to the new 3TB HD, then format the 1TB HD and use in the new computer. Both HDs are Western Digital Black SATA 7200RPM. Would it be safe to put the 1TB HD in the new computer, transfer the files, then format the HD using the new computer? Will it be okay if there's another version of Windows (XP) on that 1TB HD while I have Windows 10 installed on the 3TB HD?

Yeah it will be perfectly fine to do so. Done it many times without a hitch. Just make sure after installing your your old HD into your new PC, select the new HD in the BIOS as the one you want to boot into.

I moved the old 1TB HD to my new computer and tried to move the files from My Documents to my new 3TB HD but I cannot get permission to view files in folder. I tried to go to Properties > Security > Advanced (for special permission) > Change (ownership) > selected Administrator. I clicked OK and it said Error Applying Security. How do I fix this?

Commonly when you want to access My Documents for the first time, it will say you do not have access to this folder. During that pop up dialog appears you should click 'Continue' to have full access while using the Administrator's account. Should that thing not appear and instead something else when attempting to access the folder, do send a snap shot of the pop up dialog box here. The pop up that should appear would look like this

I solved it. I changed ownership from "Administrator" to Administrators."
