i have WD 500gb external hard drive when i copy files from laptop the transfer speed is around 25-27 only .. it start over 100 then drops.

even after making format still slow

- laptop is working fine
sony vaio i7 4500U
8GB RAM

i think the problem from what i understand is from external HDD right ? if YES ...
if i bought new one is the speed will to be faster or i have to consider other things like CPU hardware etc ?

Always.
The speed of any data transfer is limited by the speed of the slowest device in the chain.

Here, this may or may not be "5400RPM". It may be USB 2, it may be something else.

You have slow 5400rpm internal hard drive. If your laptop is not brand new, there's good chance the files on it are fragmented, which means they will read slower.

There are purpose-build applications to test disk performance.

Observing the Crystal Disk test for both local partitions, it seems that the disks are reporting "acceptable" speed for WD blue-like class of HDs. On the other hand, the external is reporting extremely low speed.

-We can't rule out the fragmentation but testing with both partitions C,D to external would increase confidence that it's not fragmentation.

-The file used for testing should also be 1GB+

-Try different external HDD cable if available

If the problem persists, and given that fact that he's using USB 3, then probably the external isn't working properly and testing it on another machine would be decisive.

Make sure both use NTFS file system format if you're using windows since it usually delivers better speed.

Tha files are videos I copy always one file at once because mostly it's over than 10GB
- I'll try to find another cable or New E HDD and see.

Can you guys recommend the best externals these days 4TB or over? I think I need to buy new one
