Transferring From one HD to another

Ok so my question is this, If I take the hard drive im using now with windows vista 64 on it out and put in a new hard drive and put windows 7 on it, would I be able to pull all my media files from the older HD if I have it in as a slave so I could reformat it and use it for back up? or would I need to put all the files on the new one and then install 7 clean? or is there possibly another way I could do it? I only have a 16gb thumb drive and I have probably 600gb of movies music pic ect. and its only usb 2.0 so that is out of the question lol

From what you said, I don't see why you couldn't transfer data from your old hard drive to your new one by connecting it as a slave after installing windows 7. I'm guessing you have a desktop computer?

Yeah, Sorry I didn't state that haha, I've never had a laptop so I just assume. You know what they say about assuming..
