Transferring PS4 game data from external drive to laptop

This is somewhat complicated but here it is. I just bought PS4. I also bought a external drive with saved games on it. Problem is I would have to format it so it can work with my new PS4. once you format it , whatever saved data is erased. Is it possible to transfer the saved games on my laptop. then moved the games on my external drive after I formatted it on the PS4?

When you connect that hard drive to your laptop, do you see any files? Any partitions?
I doubt Sony would use "standard" disk formats, just for cases like yours.

I can see all the files when the external drive is connected to my laptop. they show up as .pkg files. Not sure if I would need to use a program to transfer the files over on my laptop or if I could just transfer them regularly by dragging them over the drive onto the cpu.

It's up to you to try. Make sure you copy also hidden / system files as well. But if game developers did their job properly, these "game save"s would be un-restorable.
