Transferring Storage to New Computer issues

So I recently built a new computer and I am trying to transfer my files/folders ect from my old computer to my new one. I bought a 5TB WD Passport external harddrive and copied everything from my old computer into it.

Then I plugged the WD Passport into my new computer and transferred the files into it. This is where I'm running into issues.

When I go to open some of the folders that I transferred in, I get this message:

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

The files aren't in use and it is basically telling me I don't have authority to open these files. I get other messages of the like telling me I don't have authority to open the files.

How do I set the file so that I can open it. I have a feeling I just need to change some sort of authorization setting, but I don't know what. I'm running Windows 10. Both computers (new and old) are running windows 10 and were in an admin account when files were transferred.

I was hoping that would help but it didn't. This is the error I get when I try to open one of my videos:

"Can't play.

We can't get to the file for this item. Make sure another app isn't using it, that you can access the place the file is stored, and that your network's proxy settings are correct. Then try again.

0x00d11d2 (0xc1011aa)"

The error makes no sense. I'm just double clicking a video.

Now, I followed you advice and took ownership of the folder everything is in. Did you want me to take ownership of the WD Passport drive and then try to transfer my files?

Thanks.

Hey there again, riccardi50!

Yes, I'd recommend you to first take ownership of the drive and repeat the transfer of the file. You could also try taking ownership of the file itself.
If the issue still persists, I'd suggest you to backup the data from the WD My Passport and reformat it. Afterwards, copy back the files and try transferring them to the new PC build.
Is it possible that the file itself might be corrupted? Have you tried accessing and loading it from the old computer?

I know the files aren't corrupt because I can play them on the old computer AND I can copy the file on the new computer and open and play the copy. I just can't open and play the original. I took possession of the original file and still can't open it. I'd rather not have to make copies of everything just to view my files.

This seems odd since both PCs run Windows 10. 🙁 Is it possible that you might have done some recent Windows Updates on the new PC that are not yet installed on the old rig with Windows 10?
I'm recommending you to try resolving the issue by reformatting the external HDD, which would erase all the files you have on it. This is exactly why making a copy of the files on the computer you can access them from, then erasing the WD Passport; and transferring them back sounds like an option that might help you view/play the data from the new PC rig.

If you need further assistance with this, I'd strongly recommend you to get in touch with our customer support.
