Transferring windows from laptop hdd to desktop hdd

I was wondering if it is possible to duplicate my laptop hard drive onto a blank desktop hard drive. And if it is possible, will windows work on both computers? or do i HAVE to buy an entirely new windows OS.
How would I go about doing all of this?
