Pc has a fairly hefty heatsink about normal size. GPU is pretty big it's a R9 290 Asus DCUII. I don't think I have the box of the case anymore. So is it worth the hassle and money to buy cardboard boxes and styrofoam? Or should I just strap it up by itself? It's going to be strapped up in the trunk of the car anyways for 1,5h and back the same time. We're going to a LAN so I would like to be plug and play as much as possible. All the peripherals I will transport in a backpack.

Well you are transporting it in the trunk of the car, unless you drive on a really, really rocky road, or really fast, there will be no need for a box or anything. But frankly speaking if you do that, even a box won't save you. Just make sure you don't drive carelessly and there is not much shaking involved. If there is A LOT then you would be better off removing your GPU, PSU and CPU cooling. But I doubt that, so just drive carefully.

Without box?
