My friend has a ASROCK A785GM-LE. He tried to install a Phenom II X4 980 3.70 GHz Processor - Socket AM3 PGA-938 because pcpartpicker didn't say it was incompatible. When looking on the asrock website, it doesn't seem to be compatible. Now that he is trying to re-install the old one, when he presses power the fans turn on and LED light up, but nothing else really seems to work. (nothing showing on monitor for instance)

That phenom infact should be compatible, as the ASRock motherboard does support AM3. However for the computer not working now, that could be many things. You may have to find out how to reset the CMOS with a jumper.

Are you sure it is compatible? I'm thinking it might not be compatible because the new cpu is 3.7 ghz and the mb is pretty old I think. It's not listed here so that is what worries me.
