Here's my (quite old) system:

Intel DP55WG mobo
Intel i5 750
Radeon HD 6770
8gigs DDR3
Windows 10

Here's what happened:
I bought an RX560 because the old GPU just isn't cutting it. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I'm not looking for bleeding edge tech pumping out 120fps at 4K. I'd just like to play PUBG with the guys and have it be playable. The HD6770 pulls 20fps at minimum settings. Boo.

According to this: https://goo.gl/yeB4wJ the GPU should be compatible with the mobo.

Anyway, I plugged said RX560 into my mobo without first installing the bundled driver CD. I started it up and was treated to 2 long beeps and and then the boot hung up with an E9 post code on the mobo. The beeps mean "video error" and the E9 means "entering BIOS setup."

I swapped the old HD6770 back in, booted right up, and installed the driver for the RX560. Turned off the PC again, swapped the new GPU back in again, started it up and again got 2 long beeps and an E9 post code again.

The 560 came back out, the 6770 went back in, and a little research revealed that my BIOS is like, 7 versions out of date, and that's probably why the brand new GPU isn't playing nice with my ancient mobo. Intel's website easily and conveniently offers 3 ways to flash and update the BIOS, and the one they recommend is the EXE that runs from within Windows.

I downloaded it, ran it, and it warned me "DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THIS UPDATE IS BEING PERFORMED!!" I clicked "OK, I'll be sure not to do that, then" and the very first thing the update does is turn off my computer. The fans kept spinning, the lights stayed on, but that's it. No Clicks, nothing on the screen to indicate to me that it's doing anything. After an hour of a black screen I finally shut the computer off and back on. It doesn't boot. It doesn't beep. My monitor turns itself off because there's no incoming signal.

I toggled on the little "BIOS MODE" button on the mobo and nothing changed. The fans and lights get power, but nothing useful happens. No beeps, no post codes, nothing.

I removed the jumper on the motherboard to put it into "BIOS Recovery" mode, and still nothing. It doesn't even try to post.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this? Or am I about to upgrade A LOT more than just my GPU?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hmmm... If you have the cash, go new. You're gonna have to build a new system at some point... This was the will of the PC Gods... It's time for a new rig!

That's kind of what I was afraid of. So now the question is, is it worth even $20 (and half a day of disassembly, soldering, and reassembly) to bring this 7 year old motherboard back from the dead? Especially considering that for well under $300 I can make a new machine that blows this one out of the water. . .

ok if the bios is still a little bit alive...windows updates bricks mb never use windows to update bios...most new mb have updater in the bios or you use a botable usb/floppy disk. try this on a usb stick put the last bios file unzip on a fat 32 formated usb stick. in the root of the usb stick. look online see if you have an award or ami bios. they both have files to rename to try and recover the bios. with the bios jumper on recover put the usb stick and power on. it might take 20 or more min for the mb to try and revcover. if it does you may see the mb reboot and recover.

I tried smorizio's fix, but to no avail. Calvin's fix is cheap, but I'm not willing to put that much work into a 7-year old machine, so Haza, you are the winner. Newegg, here I come!

Alright!!! Make sure to post about what kind of goodies you get! Have fun!
