tried to update vista, but it says service unavailable

I recently found that most applications that say support vista end up saying that i require the vista platform update to run it, but whenever I try to go to updates, it just says "windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." but it always comes up with the same thing, no matter how much i restart my computer. it is connected to the internet and is on home basic. Please help.
