dumb question about tripods: are they universal in the sense that any digital
camera will work with any tripod or are they camera specific-or both? I just
got the minolta z3 and want to get a tripod but can't seem to find enough
detail on the web or on-line stores to guarantee that I'll be buying the right
product.

Thanks, Tom Pallen

Tripods are pretty universal in that most use a 1/4"-20 screw for the camera
mount. Same for Digital and film cameras. The camera must have a tripod
mount socket.

The only thing to worry about is how heavy the camera is, some light weight
tripods are not very stable with a heavy camera.

You can get tripods that have a quick release. Those have a small mounting
plate that mounts to the camera. You can have multiple camera mounts that
make changing cameras on the tripod very fast.

If I had to judge a tripod by price, I would pay around $40 or more. Really
good tripods are in the $100 and up range.

Don't get the ones with 4 legs. They never sit on the floor straight without
wobbling.

LOL - and the ones with 2 legs are always falling over when you're not
looking.

Gymy Bob, thanks for the reply. I never thought about the 4 legged problem. And
your web site very helpful too.
