Anyone ever played this custom level?

I've finished the 4th module entitled "Die alte Zisterne", but when it tries
to load what might be the most important one, "Der Tempel der Artemis", the
game CTD's (crashes to desktop)

Never had that problem with any other custom levels.

I'm out of luck?

thx!

You're out of luck if you start putting apostrophes left right and
centre!!!!! *grrrrr*.

It's : ""CTDs""
(Friendly explanation:)
The apostrophe before an s is only ever for possession, except for "It's"
where it's there for contraction (like in "don't" etc.). In fact, actually,
looking at it again you should even include the 's' at all in the above,
because the 's' is only for the verb 'crashes' which is totally abbreviated.
So just stick with "CTD". It's the most grammatically correct option.
Thanks for asking...

ok sorry, but now to remove my linguist angst, uhm....no It's never happened
to me and all the custom levels i've played. You sure it's all there?

Was it one you had to compile from the TOM files and so forth to a Tr4 file,
or already done? Script file problems? How big is it? Maybe see if you can
download it again....and sometimes I've notived if it's several parter and
you download the individual levels, things stuff up. So maybe download the
entire thing if that's possible, or if you have already, try downloading
just the individual level!

Good luck....

Hey! I've paid my dues and have my "Bachelor of Arts" sheepskin as to
forlornly hang on the wall is if it will impress anyone...

Huh!!!???

What *are* they teaching you over there!

"it's" is a *contraction*!!!!

"its" is the possessive!

(Did you read where crazy people from San Franciso are protesting our
national spelling bee and wanting us to change how we spell?)

So lets just say "itz" and call it a day! :)

<sniggering>

Actually, I'm glad you're learning something and did nobly take me to
task...

Note to self: *let's* be very careful when using apostrophes around DC! 😀

Maybe it is a "script" problem?

I think that maybe he just cut & pasted a chuck of TRLR and put it into his
own "level". Three ways to "exit" the area, so maybe he forgot to disable
two of them, and bungled the "GoTo" command, or whatever peep's use to load
the next level...

Don't know...

Never played around with the TRLE... :)

Actually, an "'s" is grammatically correct when making an abbreviated
expression plural.

Examples: CD's, VCR's, 401K's, etc.

But otherwise, you're right - a lot of people screw this apstrophe business
up on a regular basis.

No, I'm sorry, I'd have to disagree. Many people think it is, but it
actually isn't. This, of course, as defined by the Australian Federal
Goverment Style Manual for writers, editors and printers working in
Government publications.

But you raise the interesting point of common usage. Because it is now so
widespread, you could very successfully argue that it has entered the common
domain, and therefore must be accepted.

But us diehard linguists just can't hack it!

Yeah! What Brendon said! :)

(DVD's, CD's, etc.)

Actually, I just now looked it up in the 'Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association'...

(That's the one I have to use when writing anything "formal" nowadays...)

....And the verdict is...

<drum roll pleeze...>

Found on page 110 (section 3.28)

"To form the plural of most abbreviations and statistical symbols, add s
alone, but not italicized, without an apostrophe."

<pauses while DC gloats no doubt> 😉

Still, in common parlance maybe it's like using passive voice or ending a
sentence with a preposition...

Don't know that it's something that most people would pay attention *to*.
:-D

Har-de-har-har...

Yes, unfortunately that is the way...there are a variety of grammatical
structures/ laws that are just not used much any more. It's called language
purity, and most linguistis agree that language purists are fools! Language
must evolve, change and adapt.

However, I still feel that the argument against adding an apostrophe to an
abbreviated plural is valid, and I won't budge on it.

Well stuff like passive voice is more a stylistic issue, but Mechanics
(apostrophe), and Grammar & Usage...

Don't think I'd want to budge too much on Grammar & Usage either.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up! :)

I start EDU 5003 (Research Methods) Tomorrow.

Ahhhhh!

It's five months worth of course work in a normal semester, that's crammed
into just four weeks during the summer!

Yikes!

That's a mid-term in just two weeks!

Oh nooooo!

I'm going to fail and get a "C" and you're not allowed to get a "C" in grad
school!

Pre-situational Anxiety!

Oh noooo! Oh no oh no oh no oh no on no!

I don't know what a variable is! I've forgotten even a simple Z-Model
formula from Statistics!

Oh noooo!

<cough gag spit>

(typist has just had a coronary)

<cheers and rowdy applause form the gallery>

:)

Nah, good luck with it all...don't stress, have fun, and you'll be fun.
Remember you're there because you *want* to be, however it may have
hapenned, so just work like that, only because you want to and are
interested.

thx! :)

First "abstract" is due day after tomorrow...

Read three chapters and be ready to discuss them by tomorrow...

Oh, and skim another two chapters because they will be on the test about a
week from today...

(Good thing this is the only class I have and that I don't happen to have a
life right now...<g>)

I "borrowed" this from a grammar website:

An apostrophe is also used to form some plurals, especially the plural of
letters and digits. Raoul got four A's last term and his sister got four 6's
in the ice-skating competition. This is particularly useful when the letter
being pluralized is in the lower case: "minding one's p's and q's" or "Don't
forget to dot your i's." (In a context in which the plural is clear,
apostrophes after upper-case letters are not necessary: "He got four As, two
Bs, and three Cs.")

****It is ----no longer---- considered necessary or even correct to create
the plural of years or decades or abbreviations with an apostrophe:******

"No longer", implying it once was considered correct. For those of us of a
certain age (and I'm really not that old), this was thought in school. All's
fair in love and English! :)

He wrote several novels during the 1930s.

There are fifteen PhDs on our faculty.

My sister and I have identical IQs.

(If you wrote Ph.D. with periods, you would add an apostrophe before the
pluralizing "s": Ph.D.'s) If the abbreviation or acronym ends in "S," it's a
good idea to separate this final "S" from the pluralizing "s" with an
apostrophe: SOS's

Sorry to flog a dead horse, but I hate being misunderstood.

I'm thinking that this whole "five months of course work in four weeks"
gives new meaning to the phrase "exhaustive research".

Noodle is well done and definitely fried right about now...

Have the weekend off now though!

Yet! :)

Oh no need to apologize! That means that perhaps three of us enjoy the
English major stuff. :)

Our numbers are growing heeheehooohaahaa!

I'm with you on the numbers bit I think. I was taught. "He wrote several
novels during the 1930's."

No idea what the publication manual says about it. It only covered
abbreviations, statistical symbols, etc.
