Trouble accessing the internet when connected - in public places

Hello,
I am able to access the internet in places like Borders and Barnes & Noble, yet I rarely can get a browser to open and function successfully. Can someone please help me figure out how to solve this issue? Thank you.

Your firewall may be protecting you. Which one do you use. If you have Windows Vista or Seven, the Network needs to be put into a trusted zone like Home or Work.
