Trouble activating and updating SP1

I had to reinstall XP on my old Tecra 780 using the original disc. I need to run utility software that only works on XP, so I'm stuck with it. But I can't register online, orbit Windows update to run, or download the SP3 update manually. I tried installing Firefox, but it won't install on XP1. The Microsoft download page loads with errors and then becomes unresponsive to. I ran easyfix twice. Any advice? Is there a browser that will install and allow me to use the MS download page, or any place to download the service packs?

You're going to have a hard time getting anything going on that system.
I'm sure that a 32-bit copy of Windows 7 should allow you to use the utility software that you need.

No the software is a custom in-house application used to set up and test proprietary equipment, and can't get any further support or development from the original manufacturer. Gotta be XP.

That would be stellar. Need to run the software to configure some older model infrared cameras, which were very special purpose to begin with and there's no chance of getting any updated control software. I hated to reinstall the XP OS in the first place, but it began to blue screen after I tried to reinstall Office, and I couldn't restore it to a working state. Live long as prosper.

You should be able to use the automated call center, number given on your activation window. I re-installed XP on a couple of laptops last month.

It updated SP1A correctly for me. I yanked the hard drive and scanned it for viruses after the install, but as always- best to scan yourself.

I'm hosed until I get back to my home setup - still getting errors loading web pages, can't download anything, can't install an old version of Opera or Firefox. So when I get back I will download the service pack images and burn discs. Hopefully I'll be able to bootstrap it back into operation. Thanks for the tip on registration - I was able to get that done, anyway.
