Back in August I installed the free upgrade to Windows 10 from 7 Pro
Ever since, the first start, the computer sits at the black screen with the white underscore blinking like there is no boot directory, but Ctrl alt delete restarts it and it boots fine afterwards

Can you please clarify on one thing, this happens every time you boot the computer?

This happens every time. And the second boot always works.

The PC was a custom build from 2013

AMD Phenom II x6 1090T
Asus MB I can't remember exactly
Samsung SSD - Primary
WD Black Edition - Secondary

Installed later after Windows 7 Install
WD Red Edition
WD Black Edition

Ever since the Windows 10 upgrade it doesn't boot on first attempt, but ctrl alt delete to restart or pushing on/off button boots it successfully the second time, every time.

And before the upgrade to 10, never had boot issues on Windows 7
