I had an HP envy tower that was pretty decent, but I wanted an upgrade. I bought EVO 850 SSD and 2 TB Firecuda. I decided to get a better processor and mother board. I got an i7 7700 and the above mentioned ASUS z270 Mark 2. Build seemed to go well, powered up into bios. All looked good. Restarted and the windows login screen came up in seconds. easy peasy right. Nope. Keyboard and mouse don't work at this point. Back into bios. They work. At windows login nothing.

So, I went back and installed the old DVD drive into my build, as I had an ASUS install disk for the MB. Can't get the dvd drive to install motherboard files either. I did get to a point where it said a bootable disk was detected in the dvd drive. Hit enter within 5 sec. Did that and ended up at free dos prompt. Couldn't figure out anything there.

More research says reinstall windows. The hard drive is confused. Chipset is calling for a bunch of hardware that isn't there. Well, I don't have a disk for win 7, but I have a usb drive with the image on it. This may be my problem. Ran into this once before. I believe you have to do something to make the USB work. Can't just save the file. Can't remember what I did to fix that last time it happened to me, but it was a different mb anyway.

Anyway, after more research and a lot of messing around, I tried creating an admin password, to disable secure boot, but that didn't work. I then deleted the PK key to allow secure boot to be disabled, that worked. Yes I copied the pk file first. Rebooted, reset boot order. Still can't get the USB to kick off a win 7 reinstall. Plugged dvd drive back ina nd the asus 270 disc still wont run

I tried unplugging all drives except the SSD that has my WIN 7 home premium install on oit on it, nothing.

So at this point I am stuck. Maybe I need to bite the bullet and buy Win 10 DVD. IDK. Hoping the community can help me find a solution that doesn't require spending more money.

Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention that I am plugging into the 2.0 USB ports in the back of the PC. Although, while in bios, the mouse and keyboard will work in the 3.0, I had that problem before as well.

Last thing, the DVD drive hangs with or without a disk. When I open thte DVD drive, booting up continues. Not sure if that clue helps with a resolution.

Thanks. Just remembered that I cheaped out last minute and got an i5 7600. But still that is a 7th gen, so you may have solved it for me. Although, not a free solution, at least it may prevent further aggravation. Thanks for the quick reply.
