So over the past week I've tried to OC my i5 skylake cpu (title, duh) and no matter what settings i change or how little i change, my computer fails to reboot on the new settings and asks me to reset.

I never had this problem with my i5 - 4690k unless i really cranked it up.

My current specs are:
i5 -6600k
MSI z170a m5
32g DDR4-2133 Kingston

this is my full parts list if it helps

Thank you so much for any help! :^)

EDIT: Even changing the base clock from 35 to 36 has this effect.

Solution

I don't own an MSI mobo, so I wouldn't know their way of updating BIOS's. You can go online and try to find some tutorials on updating BIOS's or read your mobo manual. Apparently there is a "flash utility" missing from the zip file.

When you download the update, is it an .exe or .ISO?
If it is exe, close ALL programs and run it (if your PC shuts down unexpectedly during the update, u have a bricked mobo). If it is ISO, Mount it as a bootable disk and boot from it.

That's where I got it from. Both my PC and laptop read it as a 160 file. The manual (finally found it) says that I just have to put it on a usb then go into flash mode, but I tried that and it couldn't read the file.

Alright, I was just over-complicating it. Literally all I had to do was extract the zip into my flash drive and then run m-flash from the BIOS. Selected the file, updated, and now I can OC my CPU. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. :^)
