Trouble running 2 RAM sticks on old mobo

So I decided to give an old PC an upgrade, by installing an SSD and upgrading the RAM

The SDD and w10 went fine, the trouble started on installing the new RAM

Mobo: ASUS m4a78lt-m BIOS version 0802 (latest)
RAM: 2x G.Skill 4GB DDR3-1600

When both RAM sticks are inserted (any configuration of slots) windows BSOD's before it can get to the login screen. Same thing in Recovery Mode. Various stopcodes but all point at memory.

With 1 RAM stick (either, any slot) everything works fine.

Memtest won't run with both sticks (crashes within 20 seconds to boot loop).
Memtest is perfect on 1 stick at a time, tested both slots (so 4 tests, ~15 passes each).

So far I've tried upping the voltage from 1,5 to 1,55. Same issues...

At wit's end here. Problem is not either of the sticks, nor the slots as these all work fine 1 stick at a time...

Solution
cpu? overclocked?

set ram to match the cpu's native memory support speed in the bios (often 1333) and see if you're stable now.
if you aren't, which exact ram is this so we can see if GSkill says its compatible.
