Trouble setting up router in college dorm

When trying to set up a router in my dorm room, I always get "dns server isnt responding", and such. I have went into the router settings and disabled DCHP like many things online had requested, and have tried cloning the routers mac to my pc, yet to no avail. The ethernet here does have a login system to use the internet (It doesnt bring up a webpage, windows brings up a sign in dialog) I think its 802.1X. Is this the reason my router fails to assign itself any internet settings such as subnetmask, default gateway, ip, automatically? Is there a way to fix this?

Yea that is most likely why. you have just have to turn off DHCP on your router, plug the school ethernet into the LAN not the WAN port and just use it as a Switch/Access Point.

That or find out the exact way it authenticates to the collage network and try setting up the WAN settings in the router to match that.

Thanks, but plugging the ethernet in from the wall into either the LAN or WAN, broadcasts a signal, but gets stuck when connecting with wireless devices on "Obtaining IP Address".

So is there pretty much no other way to hook it up? The IT dept. here doesnt help with routers.

Probably because you're not meant to have it. Whatever youre doing now

I've got a feeling that your stay at college will not be a long one. You don't know what you are doing, you are putting the network at risk, the IT department will find out what you are doing. They will not be pleased; you will not be happy with the outcome.

If they use 802.1x you will never get past this issue since it is designed to prevent you from doing exactly what you are attempting.

It is pretty easy to tell. Clone the mac of your PC into the router. Then plug the wan port into the wall and see if you get a IP address. 802.1x authentication run even before DHCP so if your router is not given a IP at all especially when it is using a mac from the PC you have no hope of using a router.
