Trouble staying connected

Hello,
I have an old Dell laptop and recently am having trouble staying connected to the linksys wireless router. I just reloaded XP because of a corrupt file but still cannot stay connected. At one point it was working great. I have internet connection on the desktop but cannot maintain a strong signal and connectivity on the laptop. Help!

Give some more detail.. how far away are you from the router, when your on the notebook?
