Trouble video streaming to dell venue 8

I plugged a hard drive into my WD router and I've been trying to stream video from it to my Dell Venue 8 Android Tablet. I used ES File Explorer to access the hard drive and I can see the video files. When I click a video file VLC has a

Playback Error VLC encountered an error with this media. Please try refreshing the media library.\

I tried other video players like BSPlayer and MXPlayer and they don't work either.

But when I use ES File EXplorer and copy a file to my sd card VLC will successfully play the file. I'm not sure what I am missing, and I'd appreciate any insights anyone else has to share.

Quick google search shows that it maybe due to the media players looking for the wrong URL. You should probably post with networking instead of systems.
