Hey! I am going to buy a Dell U2417H shortly to replace my old 32 inch 720p Samsung LCD that only supports HDMI. My question is: how can I use my Dell as the main monitor and the old LCD as an extension of my desktop, as a second screen? Can I connect the Dell with DP and the Samsung with HDMI separately? Or do I have to Daisy Chain by buying a DP to HDMI adapter in order to connect the Samsung LCD as second screen?

Best regards

You can connect them separately. You select which one will be your primary monitor in Windows Display Settings.

Whether it is possible to daisy-chain or not depends on the monitor. Some support adapters through daisy-chain ports, some don't.
You should be able to hook each up to their own port. but it depends on your video card. If the card (or integrated graphics if you're using them) support multi GPU, as most do, then you shouldn't have a problem. HDMI goes to HDMI and DP goes to DP. Once you're in Windows you'll just need to set up display settings and you'll be good to go.
