I have a user that has AutoCADD Mechanical 2004 on his machine. When he
tries to bring up either mspaint of pbrush he gets this error;
"The dynamic link library MFC42u.DLL could not be found in the specified
path
C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT\system;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\programfiles\commonfiles\Autodesk shared\"

I went in and copied that dill into every spot it said it looked and I got
the error;
"The application or DLLC:\WINNT\system32\MFC42u.DLL is not a valid Windows
NT image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

I removed the program and used the disk to replace it and still get the same
error. Has anyone come across this before? I have more NT workstations and
no other has this problem but also no other has this AutoCADD so i am
thinking it has something to do with that but am not sure what or what to do
to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

The problem is that the dll is not properly registered. Simply copying
a dll to the right location(s) does not allways fix a missing dll
problem, sometimes it needs to be registered. I have experienced this
problem with Xerox programs and MFC42.dll. In that case I have a small
utility that properly registers the dll. As to MFC42u.dll I am not sure
if there is a utility to properly register it. Did you try reinstalling
Paint and see if it fixes the problem?

You could try to manually register the dll using the regsvr32.exe
command line tool. To do that open a command prompt and navigate to the
folder where mfc42u.dll is located and execute the following command:
regsvr32 mfc42u.dll

Another way of fixing it might be to reinstall your Microsoft Foundation
Classes Libraries. See here for more information:

Where Do I Get the Microsoft Libraries Update?

Note: The Libraries updates is shown as a W98 product but it is the
same for and also applies to NT, just donload and run it.
