Hi all,

Context: For the last week i have been trying to troubleshoot the source of this problem i am experiencing with my new gaming build. All components are brand new.

Components:

  • Gigabyte B650 Gaming X Ax
  • Gigabyte 750W PSU Gold
  • MSI Ventus RTX 4070 OC x3
  • Ryzen 5 7600x
  • Corsair DDR5 5600mhz 16gb x 2

Problem: With the GPU plugged into the PCIE x16 slot, it does not boot, and just shows a blank, black screen. Red VGA Led stays solid on motherboard. However, if i unplug the PSU, and drain the power from the board, then it boots to windows with no problems. This issue only presents when REBOOTING the pc through windows or case button. The CPU has an iGPU and also boots to windows with no problems.

Tested troubleshooting:

  • Reseated GPU
  • Reset CMOS
  • Updated to latest BIOS
  • Reseated CPU
  • Tried the GPU in a different PCIE slot - this works and boots nominally
  • Tried a different GPU (RX 480) in the PCIE x16 slot - this works and boots nominally
  • Removed all drivers through DDU and reinstalled.
  • Different DP and HDMI Cable
  • Different monitor
  • Checked all connections from PSU to board to components.
  • Clean install of windows & all updates]

I am trying to understand whether this is due to a faulty component, and if so, which component is it? Or perhaps there is another issue or troubleshooting i have not examined yet. I would really appreciate any support and i am happy to provide anything required to help troubleshoot this.

Thanks in advance!

Anyway you can test the 4070 in another pc?

You could just be bold and rma the 4070, maybe a different one wil solve the issue. Use the RX 480 till then.
I haven't got another PC to test it in, but i dropped it off at a PC repair shop this morning to see if they can diagnose the fault.

The vendor is sending a courier to pick up the GPU on thursday, but i was hoping to:
a) try and fix the problem incase it is not the GPU, which saves me sending it back
b) find out if its the motherboard or the GPU. If i send the GPU back and it is not the problem, then it is back to the drawing board. So i might ask if i can return both for testing.

I am also starting to think that it could be due to the RTX 4070 being so new that it is incompatible with some motherboards, or needs a firmware update that is not avaliable yet.

That could be a wise move as well.

Hard to say.
I have contacted Gigabyte to see if they can provide a response but I don't expect I will hear back from them any time soon. I do think that it could be a compatibility issue, but i have been told that it is not uncommon for new components to be DOA.

Well technically both aren't DOA since either on it's own works, even the gpu, just not in the main pcie slot.
Yes you are right, they aren't 'dead' per se, but something isn't functioning nominally.

I just wonder why the RX 480 works in the main pcie, but this doesn't. Also probably useful to mention that BIOS displayed that PCIE was running at x8 rather than x16 in the main slot.

Might be a current incompatibility which (again) might be solved with bios updates, but in reality should these work together.
See if you can send both back and try with replacements.

You're welcome. Can only try and hope it helps.:)

I got my PC back from the repair shop and he said that its the motherboard because it's not detecting the ram in other channels and the GPU works in a different motherboard PCIE slot with no problems.

Just to be sure, i've asked to return both the motherboard and GPU. Fingers crossed!
