Question Troubleshooting dead motherboard or GPU?

Hey All,

Apologies likely repeating a question asked a million times, had a look through the stickied guide and nothing worked.

My PC has been running fine for approx 3 years, a couple of days ago my PC booted normally and then randomly shut down before I could do anything with it. It restarted immediately and loaded for approximately 30 seconds before restarting again, it continued to do this multiple times remaining booted for anywhere between 30 seconds - 10 minutes. During one of the longer times it stayed working, the CPU temp would sit between 40-60 degrees (got close to 60 after multiple boot/fail attempts).

After about 10 or so times of this happening the video output has completely died. I get no POST/BIOS and no signs of life through video output. My GPU fans don't start but the RGB power on the side starts fine and the error light remains unlit. The case, CPU and PSU fans all run and appear to be working normally. I've tried booting with 1 stick of RAM in, alternating each one and no change. I've got the mobo speaker installed and I'm getting no sounds at all coming from it, no troubleshooting LEDs/lights on the board, unfortunately. Also I've tried booting without the GPU installed and using onboard graphics and no response/no signs of anything on the monitor. I also know the monitor/cables work as I've plugged them into a laptop and can dupe the screen from the laptop onto screen.

Unfortunately, I've got no access to a different PSU/GPU to test them, but from the above description and below specs, are there any likely culprits? I had been thinking GPU, PSU or motherboard being the likely candidates but with the PSU fans running as per normal I was thinking maybe motherboard/GPU?

Build Specs:
Case:Gamdias Argus M1
Motherboard:Gigabyte Z490M Gaming X LGA1200
CPU:i7-10700
CPU Fan:Noctua NH-U9S
Memory:2 x G. Skill Ripjaws F4-3200 16GB

Troubleshooting isn't about pointing a finger at a part and hoping that the culprit was the one who was at fault.

In reality you will need a replacement part or a replacement system borrowed from a friend or neighbor to help rule out which part is the root cause of the issue.

Your motherboard has a function known as the Q_Flash_Plus(white) button(middle of the board, left hand corner);
1000

Try and flash the BIOS with the latest version and see if that revives your system.

Well, if it's same problem without GPU, I would assume it's not the reason and leave it out for now. When you test RAM and other components by taking them out or relocating, always reset CMOS between steps.

Thanks for the Q_Flash_Plus suggestion - I've just tried and no difference, all fans minus GPU firing up and no video.

Because I'm living rural all friends who have parts are likely 2-3hours away - was more so asking about the culprit in terms of starting points, like if any of the listed parts have a good history of failing. It's looking like I'll have to call in a couple favours and load up some known working spare parts when I'm close to the city again!

Cheers :)

Try replacing the CR2032 BIOS backup battery. Some motherboards fail to start up when the BIOS battery fails.

A new battery will read 3.25V on a multimeter. I replace batterries that drop below 2.50V.

You might consider buying a replacement CPU, e.g. a Celeron or Pentium from this list.

You'd probably have to spend around $50 on eBay, but you could re-sell the CPU if it doesn't highlight the problem.

Thanks for the tip! I tried with a fresh CR2032 battery and no joy. I'll look into getting a couple of parts to keep spare for situations like this in the future :)
