Hi, I have much trouble copying and moving files from my Hard Disk D.

I can only move files inside the D disk.
When I try to move them to another drive, It the progress bar goes to approximately 10-15% before freezing...
Same thing happens when I try to copy or compress the files...Even in the D drive..
Until now, this problem happens when the files being moved or copied exceed 200-300MB and when I'm prompted during the transfer.
Sometimes the freezing ends into a Blue Screen error but mostly, it's like the whole windows restarts, leaving me with a blank desktop...

Then, there's another issue with downloading;
When I start my downloads (through a download manager with an auto shutdown function), the computer seems to run normally. I go to sleep and the next morning, the laptop seems to have had a Blue Screen error and restarted; The background is black and an error is displayed in white which is about some ???tek Ethernet Adapter(or something like that)...

What I'd like to know is if it's the OS (Windows 7, in this case) which is the source of these problems or if it's a hardware issue.

I desperately need to get these files backed-up...

Has anyone get this type of problems before?

Realtek ethernet adapter?

Ive seen this bluescreen error on my sony vaio netbook many times. Best advice i have for you is to update your network drivers, and also to scan your disks for errors 'chkdsk' will do that for you.

that would be start -> run, type: 'cmd' and hit enter, type: 'chkdsk C: /r' it may ask you to reboot.

I've tried to install the new drivers but it's freezing each time the installation starts extracting files and for chkdsk, when I check the disk directly(without passing through cmd), it says that no problems were found but when I use chkdsk through cmd.exe, it freezes at step 4 of 5 and, of coarse, I get the Blue Screen error.. It's as if each and every time I do something related to memory writing, it freezes over...
Strangely, I can run Counter Strike 1.6 without freezing or crashing!

I'm lost... :pfff:

hmm, collect a few more of these 'blue screen' errors, and note the error code each time... it should look something like 000x000000 but with real numbers. its important to not if the errors are the same or different every time.

Also, are is your boot disk an SSD, or is it a rotary hard disk?

Aem.. I don't know much about the hard disk except that D is its partition and that it's a 250GB SATA hard disk...

Concerning the blue screen, I just managed to get a good quality photo;
The code is the same as the one I gave yesterday but this time I'm able to read the whole line:

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007A (0xC040FC38, 0xC0000185, 0x29AA1860, 0x81F87005)

I'm still lost... :pfff:

"STOP: 0x0000007A" that error code comes back as a "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" - This indicates that the requested page of kernel data from the paging file could not be read into memory. In english this means that the computer tried reading information from your hard disk, and the hard disk said "NO".

Another common cause of this error message is defective hardware or failing RAM.

So far this to me looks like a hardware failure, BUT it is still possible this is being caused by corrupt drivers / system files.

When did this issue first begin?

Did you notice this issue after installing any patches / new applications / updating drivers?

I would also recommend obtaining a memory testing software like memtest, and running this against your memory to see if it finds any errors.
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

A hard drive utility to test your hard disk would be beneficial as well... Seagate's utility is free, simple, and tests all brands of drives... not just thier own. You are looking for "seatools for windows"
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

There is a good chance that these tools running under windows will crash your box... if this happens consistently before you can see some kind of output... look for something like "ultimate boot cd" this will allow you to run similar tools in a different boot enviroment - one with a MUCH smaller footprint then windows, and hopefully we can see some meaningful results then.

When did this began?

Uhh.. I remember that in end of January/starting of February, I put my downloads on start before going to sleep, like every night, letting the auto-shutdown do its job but the next morning, the computer was still on. I don't remember well but think that there was the 'Realtek PCI Express Fast Ethernet Controller Series...' error on the screen.
I remember having rebooted and as usual opened my download manager to see if the downloads were finished and to put others to start but the laptop freezed and crashed just after I validated the first download.
The computer rebooted and I, again, tried to resume my downloads but this time, it freezed while the list was loading.
It rebooted again and this time again I tried to open my download manager but as I feared, the file of the list had corrupted and I lost 1100-1300 download links(I was trying to download as much as I could due SOPA/PIPA)..
I rebooted thinking that maybe the windows did not load correctly but it was in vain... I had to accept this loss..

Since this incident, the saga started; I neither could continue my downloads, nor backup those which were finished... :cry:

Concerning the 'software' part of your question, I don't remember well but I think that 1 day before the incident, my firefox browser updated without prompting me...(But I doubt a browser can bring a whole OS down.. :heink: )

And concerning the 'hardware' part, there something that could be a possible cause of hardware damage;
Since one week before the incident, we were getting frequent little power cuts.(I,in fact, thought that there could have been a power cut during the night of the incident but as laptops have batteries, I thought "NAAA! Must be the OS!..")(Note that as this laptop is my 'downloader', it's plugged 24/7.. :??: )

Maybe the only thing malfunctioning with it is...me?.. :heink:

I'll try those softwares you advised and let you know..

OK...
I ran the seatool on my hard disks, both are FAILing the tests...
I started with S.M.A.R.T, then, Long(I already forgot the full name) and finally, Self timing(or something like that...)
All result in FAIL..

there is your answer, buddy =)

Sad, but it seems that it is time to lay your hard disk to rest and get yourself a replacement ... This is usually where i recommend that you image your disk - but from what we've seen, it will be unlikely that you could pull a working image off that drive.

A fresh re-install on a shiny new disk will be the most pain-less way to go. (you can always put the old disk in an external enclosure, and attempt to pull data off it that way too.

Hehe.. {🙂
I'm happy it's still under warranty!

Anyway, thanks for helping! 🙂,-)
