Okay, so I have a D-Link Xtreme N DIR-655 (version A4) router, and it was working years ago when our ISP forced us to use a replacement. Fast forward many years (it's sitting in its original box the whole time) and now it doesn't work on the PC it originally connected to... at all (I plan to use it as a wireless receiver to get a mule account for an MMO going).

Every time I ping it via command prompt the response just says "Request timed out" and it's impossible to use Internet Explorer or Chrome, though the latter browser seems to really try before giving up.

The PC in question is using Windows XP (outdated, I know, but it's literally only going to be contacting the game server when I set it up right, and the game in question is from 2003).

I've even tried to get the router to emergency flash as described here: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.0

As far as I can tell, it just times out all the time.

And even that doesn't work. For the record, this modem has no orange led; they're all blue.

The only thing that I haven't tried is to do exactly what the original install software asks and bypass the modem given to us by the most recent ISP so that it can connect uninhibited to D-Link... but the ISP was VERY clear about using only their gear, and previously they needed special serial number identification the last time they did accept my (other) router as the modem controller. TL,DR on that paragraph: It seems impossible for this router to do what it's asking me to do, as I'm sure the ISP will block/encrypt the data it's looking for.

I have tired using a connection through the ISP modem, but the router install software doesn't like that.

So this, like several other posts I've made here, it just being put out there as a last resort. If I can't fix it I'll throw it out. I'm just hoping someone can point me in a good direction that might salvage this and save me a few bucks. Thanks for taking your time to read this.

My guess is that it has a different subnet than the ISP router. I would recommend a factory reset of the DIR-655 router. Then connect the WAN port to the ISP router. Connect a laptop to the LAN port of the DIR-655. You should then be able to get to the setup page of the DIR-655.

Factory Reset doesn't work (the install software still thinks it's got a custom username and password), I've tried the reset, according to the manual, dozens of times.

The ISP modem connects to an ISP recognized/provided router. I have tried installing both through the router and directly connected to the modem.

Yup, the browsers (tried at least three of them) go nowhere. Thanks for trying to help though.

Yeah, that's probably where it will end up. I just find it odd that it identifies as a working router (in both "ipconfig /all" and "ping") and the install software says it needs to have the factory settings to install it, and somehow the factory reset does something (makes all the lights blink out and then do stuff like it's restarting), but it doesn't actually reset anything.

It's like the device intentionally refuses to be useful... I wonder if D-Link is using planned obsolescence? Welp, I much prefer Cisco anyway.
