When I tried to change the mac address of my router to get a new IP I get a limited connection and cannot use the internet. I already tried power cycling my modem(surfboard sb6141) with no success. I also have Arris TG862 gateway. Does that need to be unplugged too? Does time warner cable use your mac address of your router to verify your service? Also does the limited connectivity go away after a certain amount of time. I only waited 10 minuted until I changed my MAC address to the original one.

You have 2 devices hooked to the coax cable ?

Generally unless you pay for multiple modems they will only allow you to have 1 device. You must register that device and you can't just change it without calling them and telling them. This uses the mac address of the modem to see who is authorized to be on their network but this may of may not be the same mac that the ip is assigned to.

With the surfbaord device that is only a modem the ip is assigned to the first device that is activated after you power cycle the modem. If you have your asus router then it should get a IP. The arris device is actually a router and it gets the IP itself. I don't know if you can use the trick of changing the mac on that device. The asus will never get a actual address if you plug it into the modem/router combo unless you make it into a modem only.

Since you have 2 modem devices your situation is hard to tell. Most times when people are trying what you are they can't get the ip to change but they at least get the same ip back over and over. You situation sounds like the asus is not getting a wan ip from the modem. You could plug you pc directly in and see if that happens to get a ip.

My Arris TG862 is downstairs and is for the phone I think(I am not very tech savvy). My Surfboard is upstairs and my router is attached to that.

That would mean you are paying the ISP for 2 ip addresses and is not your typical install. I would plug your pc directly into the surfboard and see if it gets a IP directly from the modem. You need to power cycle the surfboard device and then plug your pc in after the modem is full up.

If that doesn't work then you are going to have to talk to the ISP. If you had this working in the past then it should just work.

I changed my ip through ipconif while connected to modem. Now when I plug my router back in I am getting a limited wifi connection. Any way to fix this?
