Trying to avoid taxing

This group has always helped me before so here's another question. I
setup an IFR flight plan from one airport to another but want to avoid
the pushback and taxi part. So I choose "Start on the active runway".
But it seems to always put me on a different runway than what the
controllers want me to take off from. So I see there is a controller
window choice for something like "Request to depart from a different
runway" but the runway that *I'm on* is not one of the choices. So I am
prevented from contacting the tower for takeoff clearance until I taxi
from that runway to the one they told me. If I take off from that
runway, they yell at me that I'm not authorized to take off from that
runway and cancel my IFR. So how can I setup an IFR and avoid the taxi
step? Thanks.

John,

AFAIK you can't.
ATC has ultimate control, just like in real life!
Despite them calling you PIC (Pilot in *Command*) you haven't got any
command authority. But if something goes wrong - it's all yours :-(

If you want to stay Sim-legal, all you can do is taxi or quick taxi
(TM) (aka 'slew') to where they want you to go. Or face the
consequences...

One method, although not very realistic, is to have the flight start at
the gate/ramp, then when instructed to taxi, switch to top down view,
and slew to the departure end of the runway. When you reach the end,
you will be presented with the ATC communication choices as if you
taxied there.

You might try turning off Active Sky or Real World Weather, as the case may
be. It sounds like the active runway changes between the start of the
flight and your IFR clearance call. This is when the weather is loaded and
prevailing winds change.

Does this happen in FS9? In FS8.. I always start an IFR flight from
`position and hold' on runway. Would do the `gate and taxi' thing if
the steering and taxi thrust were closer to real. Speaking of which..
the gurus are working on taxi and runway friction.. so taxiing and
thrust threshold will be better soon.

I think that at the bottom of the screen from which you can choose an
airport is a pull-down menu with choices of runways. Change "Active Runway"
to the actual runway number that you want. I don't use IFR flight plans, so
this might not work for what you're trying to do, but maybe it will.

Hi John

When starting on the active runway I still have to go through the
"taxi and hold short of runway X" business. However, a few clicks on
the appropriate ATC command keys (numbers 1, 2, 3 etc) soon satisfies
ATC. My request for take off is soon granted and only occasionally do
I have to hold.

Why would you want to skip pushback and taxi???!!???...it´s one of the
most interesting parts of any flight...
You can even try to follow ATC taxi instructions to the runway...without
turning on your TAXI HELP (as i call it...), and it´s a
challenge...specially at those big and busy hubs. You will get lost a
few times...but you will eventually master it. And if you have add-on AI

traffic( mine is Project AI), isn´t it great when you follow all those
departing flights to the runway...or when you have to hold as a 747 is
on final.

Um, not really. Also, I don't always want to skip it; just sometimes.

I don't use those but usually have weather selected other than "Clear
Skies". Everything is selected when I press "Fly Now" so it seems like
it would be a simple thing for the sim to put me on the current active
runway when I choose active runway.

I can choose any runway at that point but the problem is that I don't
know at that time which runway ATC will want me to take off from.
That's why I thought choosing "Active Runway" would do what I needed but
it doesn't.

That is how it should work but in FS2004 I am frequently put on a
different runway than what ATC wants me to take off from when I choose
start from active runway. There seems to be no way to convince ATC at
that point to allow me to take off from the runway that I'm on.

Hi,

What I find it that FS sometimes makes "mistakes". I can usually fix it
by going to World/Map, changing my heading by one degree, and then
clicking OK. This resets ATC. Then use World/Goto Airport to put
yourself onto the correct Active Runway.

Hope this helps,

Have you tried changing this after you've started the flight find out the
runway that ATC wants you to use? You can use the pull-down menus to access
the change airport screen, then just select the same airport but change the
runway. Don't know if this would interrupt the flight plan or not, though.
