Trying to boot old IDE hard drive via usb Adapater but wont load past Windows XP start logo

Hi all, I just bought an IDE to USB adapter to get off some old photos from my our family hard drives. Just wondering if there is a possibilfity of booting into the hard drive on the old OS?

You can't boot off the USB connection but you should be able to just use it as a secondary disk and copy the files.
