Building a desktop for a friend who will primarily use it for video editing/encoding and gaming, still picking out what parts I will use.

As for the RAM, not sure which one to go for. All three seem to be roughly the same price give-or-take on Amazon/Newegg (though some are out of stock on one or the other), and are the same capacity and speed, but have different timings.

I have been deciding between the:

Patriot: PVS432G320C6K

Corsair: CMK32GX4M4B3200C16

G.Skill: F4-3200C16D-32GTZKW
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232413

Here is a comparison link of all three as well (The Patriot is out of stock on Newegg right now, and the Patriot out of stock on Amazon): https://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare?CompareItemList=9SIAG7R9RN4092,20-145-359,20-232-413

Any suggestions? I think it's mostly going to be a decision between the Patriot and G.Skill.... I kinda like G.Skill and when I last checked (Granted, that was 2012) it was some of the best... but that Patriot one is topping charts recently and seems to have better timings than any of the others.

Any lighting/RGB does not matter.

It's not even a question. The G.Skill Trident Z is superior to either of those other kits. There isn't even a conversation to be had about it. And for a 3200mhz kit, those G.Skill sticks have decent timings but they are not the upper echelon Trident Z sticks with B-die ICs (Memory chips). If they were, they'd likely have CL14 timings and THOSE are the sticks you really want, although they will be more expensive. What CPU and motherboard are you pairing this with?

So, Intel. Not as finicky as Ryzen. Even so, the lower timings of the B-die modules are SOMETIMES worth going after if the price isn't TOO wildly different. There is always a premium to be paid for premium memory though.

Especially for large kits over 3000mhz. I'd probably stick with those Trident Z sticks you looked at previously but if you are interested in VERY high quality sticks, then I'd look at these which are all CL14 B-die sticks.

Or for a happy medium, with slightly better timings than the sticks you were looking at, but not quite as good as those on the B-die sticks, these are a step up from your entry level Trident Z sticks. Keep in mind too, some of the Ripjaws are just as good, but for the most part the Trident Z sticks are the better G.Skill kits.

Hmmm, those are a bit pricy. I already was wondering if the sticks I was choosing between were overkill or not. I am building it for a friend who will be doing video editing/encoding and gaming on it, and trying to manage a budget (though without a GPU for now). I think those might be overkill for him.

Ah. Yeah, this current PC of mine has Ripjaws in it (though I built it in 2012...). I was looking up what the difference was between the Ripjaws and Trident Z, and from what I understand the Trident Z are a bit higher performance? Out of the Ripjaws and Trident Z, which would be the better choice since it's a difference of $10?

They have the same timings and speed. Personally, I like the Trident Z sticks better. They are just typically a little better to work with when it comes to tightening up timings or overclocking and I think they look nicer as well but to be honest, for the system you're putting these in, none of that is likely to apply so maybe put the ten bucks elsewhere in the build since you are trying to crunch a budget and just go with the Ripjaws.
