So I recently bought an asus rt-n56u dual-band wireless-n600 gigabit router. My isp is att and so when I tried to plug the data cable into the router, the led on the router didn't light up.

The way my network is set up is kind of confusing so I'll do my best to explain.

I have a standard att router as my main router that is in one part of the house. Since the connection doesn't reach the other part of the house, we've been using another att router that's in the other part of the house to boost the signal I guess. The two routers are connected with data cables (at least I'm pretty sure they are). I decided to replace the router that helps extend the signal (NOT the main one) and when I tried to plug the data cable in the asus router, nothing happened.

If you have any other questions that can help to determine a solution, feel free to ask!

Thanks for the help!

Is the original setup something like this:

ISP (ATT)--- some cable (?)--->[WAN port]"standard" att router" [LAN port] --------ethernet cable --->[LAN port]"another" att router [LAN port]-----ethernet cable -->wired device(s)

You mentioned "boost the signal" so that implies you have wireless devices as well - correct?

I expect that the "another" att router has been configured to service as an access point. Could be a repeater. But since you are not sure per se here is a quick explanation:

You will need to confirm if the two routers are indeed connected with cables.

Your new ASUS must be configured to serve as an access point (if that is proven to be the case) while the original "standard" att router handles the network matters such as IP addresses, wireless security, etc.

Can you provide a diagram or some photographs? Check the "standard" att routers for additonal make and model information. Do you see ADSL on any of the router ports? Or maybe a telephone line that comes in, goes to a small device (splitter) and divides between a telephone and the first router?

And can you be more specific about which lights did not "light up"?

Need to see have a bit more detail with respect to the overall setup and the device details. Thanks.
