Trying to figure it out

Hello,
I just got an older laptop from my mom that has a bad virus on it. I want to totally wipe it clean an start fresh but I don't have any OS CD's (Restore, Install). Is there a way I can do this for free and without any of those CD's?

Download a .iso of any of the freely available Linux distributions and burn it to CD/DVD. If you are thinking Windows then get out the wallet.
