Hi all,

This is my first time posting. I'm a long time lurker. I've found a lot of answers just searching the forums.

I have a problem with my desktop that I built. I can list out the exact components later if necessary. At bootup, there is a grinding noise and what sounds like something spinning up and down and down a few times. I haven't had any issues after the computer boots up.

Here's the issue I'm running into. The computer only seems to make these noises after it has been off for a while. So if I start it up, then shut it down, then start. The second start does not have the noises. This has made it hard to track down. I've taken the cover off and tried to stop components (fans) and unpluggeds HDs before boot to see if I could figure out where the sound is coming from. Unfortunately, I only have a short window to find it.

Doe anyone have some suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, i think it's the PSU because i have myself same problem. It occurs randomly or when i move PC to another room. Don't know how to fix it though. But it doesn't trouble me. My guess is that PSU cooler is a bit loose and needs time to stabilise itself by spinning. I don't recommend you to take apart PSU by yourself.

Thanks butremor. If the fan in the PSU is failing, I should try to replace it under warranty. I wish I could track the cause down. Does anyone else have a suggestion?
