Hello everyone,

This is my first post on any computer tech forum ever, so I appreciate any help I can get. I'm trying to see why my monitor isn't able to run 144 Hz refresh rate. Here are the specs of my computer:

Monitor - Asus VG248
Graphics card - NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030

I suspect I need an upgraded graphics card. However, I am unsure of what would be an adequate upgrade to enable my monitor to run at 144 Hz.

Thank you for your help!

Welcome to the forums Maru333!

Im assuming you mean the VG248QE? https://www.asus.com/au/Monitors/VG248QE/HelpDesk_Manual/

If it is, it has HDMI, DVI- Dual Link and Displayport. In order to enable 144Hz, DVI-DL or Displayport is required. HDMI is limited to 60Hz on this particular monitor.

What brand/model is your GT1030? If it has Displayport, then you can use that. Club3D and Accell make quality DP cables. If GT 1030 doesn't have DP but has DVI, im afraid DVI on GT 1030 is single link only, needs to be dual for 144Hz to work.

If you're in need of a graphics card upgrade, we'll need to know the rest of your PC specs for compatibility, power requirements and the computer's intended use.

Thank you for your reply, boju!

Yes, it is an Asus VG248QE and the graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GT1030.

The current cable in use appears to be a DVI - dual link. I looked at the back of the graphics card and I see an HDMI port and a DVI - dual link port. So, if I'm not mistaken, a DVI - dual link should be in use.

The computer is intended to be for casual use + First Person Shooter games. I'm trying to get the monitor to run at 144 Hz primarily for the FPS games.

I have a gyazo screenshot of PC specs I got from a program called Speccy, but I'm unable to post that image in these replies (error message saying I need to contact an administrator)

Typing out what it says:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700, Summit Ridge 14 nm Technology
RAM: 16.0GB Dual-Channel Unknown
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. ROG Crosshair VI HERO
Graphics: VG248 (1920x1080@60Hz)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 (EVGA)
Storage: 232GB Samsung SSD 960 EVO 250GB

Should have options but need to know the PSU and what PCIe cords it has. A more powerful card is going to require external power.

Does it say AX 850 on the side of PSU? AX is Corsair's top tier line of PSUs, very high quality. Kinda hard to believe it's 850w when it had only a gt1030 in it.

Anyway if it is, you'll have no problem running any card. It's important the cables are checked before going ahead because they simply can't randomly be bought. Pin arrangements aren't standardized and run the risk of damage. With that said, always only use the cables the PSU comes with. Do you have a friend or family member who can help identify cables? Also check the PSU box if you still have it.

Regarding which graphics card will depend on budget. See benchmarks to see the kind of numbers to expect.

Yes, I double-checked and it says AX850 on the side. This was a pre-bought PC from someone on craigslist. I checked through the boxes and extra stuff he gave me and I found a couple PCIe cords in a 6+2 arrangement.

Assuming I am trying to purchase a graphics card on the lower end price that can support the 144 Hz to the VG248QE I'm looking for, what upgrades would you suggest?

Preferably, something around $200 give or take.

Thanks again for your help!

Around Rx 580, RX 5600, Nvidia 1660/1660Ti. Maybe 2060. Few of these are going be over budget but it's going to be near impossible to get 144fps with a 200 or there about card.

GT 1030 isn't a gaming card so you'd be happy with even a RX 580.

Great! I'll start looking into those suggestions and see what I can find.

I appreciate your help throughout this thread! Definitely learned a bit about PCs that I didn't know beforehand.
