Hi. I'm trying to ID this mobo - who makes it, how much RAM & max h/d size
it'll support, whether it'll support a faster processor. I've gotten nowhere
either with Compaq Tech support or on their website.

Here's what's on a label in the center of the mobo:

Compaq Processor Board
630 REV OM s26
SP# 187498-001
P33689A T9VLUFO1
AS# 010630-101
DG# 010631-000
REV AT

Thanks for any assistance.

Who made the board for Compaq is irrelevant. Compaq does not reveal the actual
board manufacturer, and the board manufacturer is probably obligated by contract
not to say.

Google the part number 187498-001 and you will find that the chipset is an Intel
815E and that the board supports up to 512MB of memory, limited by the chipset.
Also that the board came from an Compaq DeskPro EN.

Since the chipset is 815E, you can assume that you are safe installing any
Socket 370 CPU operating at 1.65v or 1.7v. Below that becomes somewhat chancy
in the absence of clear written specs. So you could install either a 933MHz
Pentium 3 or a 1.0GHz or 1.1GHz (I forget which) CPU which meets the voltage
requirement. The HPaq web site would not even tell you this info... Ben Myers

Thanks. I actually did finally dig some of this out of the compaq website
but it really took some looking. It has to be one of the most non-user
friendly tech support sites I've ever seen, very ambiguous and hard to glean
what's going on. What you say seems to jive with what I gathered.

Apparently only certain versions of the mobo would support up to a 1.2 gig
processor but it has to be a certain type of processor configuration.

However, I still haven't found anything about the largest h/d it will
support. Any insights into that?

Should take up to 127GB without issue, I doubt it has the 48-bit LBA
capability to recognize a larger drive. HH

That's what I thought about the DeskPro EN SSF BIOS. I was rudely shocked to
find the limit MUCH lower after installing and testing drives of various
capacities... Ben Myers

If I add on an external drive, would it matter how large it is?

An external USB drive? The operating system in use may well dictate either the
max size of the hard drive or the max size of a partition. If the drive is
external USB, then you'll need a USB 2.0 add-in controller to handle the higher
transfer rate and, potentially, the software drivers needed to make the drive
go... Ben Myers
