Trying to judge whether PSU fan noise is normal or not

My PSU is a brand new EVGA 750W 80+ B2 Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX. Its fan makes a quiet, but definite clicking noise as it spins -- not the sound of moving air. I applied pressure to the CPU and confirmed that it's not case vibrations or something similar.

The sound also probably stands out due to my near-silent CPU and case fans. Still, the clicking noise is there.

I'm not sure whether this is normal or not, and whether or not to return the PSU. Any opinions or similar experiences would be appreciated!

Are you sure it is coming from the psu fan? If it is, then it could be a bearing going bad. Make sure nothing is obstructing your fan, it might be best to remove the psu from your case and plug it in separately to diagnose the issue. OPTIONAL:Try rotating the fan SLOWLY, also be careful to only touch the fan, and use something that is highly electrically resistive. feeling for any resistive obstruction of the fan as you spin it 360*.

If you are concerned about it, i would return it. I'm not there to be the judge.

Most PSU suppliers void warranty on opening the case so fixing it yourself is probably not the best option, not to mention psu's are quite dangerous if messed around with without knowing what you are doing.

Good luck :)

Thanks, those are good ideas -- I'll pull the PSU out and try that tonight.

Just remember that even if it is unplugged that it contains capacitors that remain charged so be careful, they pack a punch.

Problem solved!! I should have requested solutions when I posted this, but I figured it would just be a discussion of relative PSU noise.

In fact, there was a tiny piece of circular foam with adhesive on one side that had somehow adhered itself inside the fan grill. I feel silly for not having even looked at the PSU fan before posting this, but I never would have thought that something was stuck in there. It was the cause of the clicking noise, and now my machine is silent as can be :)

Thanks snuffles-101!
