I picked up an inexpensive used 2TB Hitachi UltraStar 7K3000 HDD for extra storage needs (nothing important). But it appears to be dead or maybe set up for another type of OS.
  1. It does not appear in BIOS, but it appears in W10 Disk Manager.
  2. When I pick up the drive while it's running, I don't get the usual spinning/torquing feel. Like it isn't even spinning... or if it is, very slowly.
  3. Diskpart shows the disk as 0B Size and 0B Free before and after I do a CLEAN.
  4. If I do a CLEAN ALL, Win returns a message saying "diskpart has encountered an error: "the media is write protected"
Below are the screenshots I receive in W10 Disk Management when I try to initialize it.
W10 sees the disk as "unknown", but offers to initialize it...

When I attempt to do just that, I get this cryptic message...

Before I return it I would like another opinion in case I'm missing something. Thank you.

How are you connecting the drive?

If with sata cables, the it's dead.
If you're connecting externally via USB-sata adapter, then it's possible the adapter is dead.
