I had a computer running XP that died on me a few months ago. The motherboard went bad and the hard drive I would guess got corrupted. I had important pictures and text documents and whatnot on my desktop I want to recover but when I look through the drive there is no trace of my XP profile or a way to see the things I had on my desktop. I have it plugged into a pc that is running Win7 and have been trying to find good data recovery programs that will help find the data I am looking for so I don't have to try and find a cheap professional data recovery company to do it for me

Search for "desktop" and you'll probably find files in that folder if they are still there. you can also use a program like this https://www.voidtools.com/ to execute really fast search on all drives. If you know exetensions of those files you can also search by them. For instance just type ".jpg" and it will find all files like that.
If everything else fails you can use some free data recovery program like : http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/glary_undelete.html but there are some other ones too. http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/data_recovery_233b.html
